Primary colours

downloadCycled over to Ilmington yesterday and stopped by the old bridge at Halford. A dazzling kingfisher shot over the wide pool and a scarlet tiger suddenly fluttered below the parapet – all stunning primary colours. This was only the third time I’d seen this moth during daylight hours – once when I chased one in South Wales as an enthusiastic eight-year old lepidopterist and then, many years later… I found one fluttering up the High Street in Totnes!! Its slightly Bohemian wing patterning seemed perfectly at home in this laid-back lentil-munching town in south Devon! I have caught the odd one in the moth trap in Kineton and they do occasionally have good years with eruptions in unexpected places – one took place in Gloucester a couple of years ago. And hopefully kingfishers are on the march too.
