Taking stock

250px-Columba_oenas1Looks like stock doves have taken over the owl box!
A pair were regularly coming for food, but one is now frequently seen on the branch by the box and we guess the other is currently sitting on eggs.
Stock doves are smaller than wood pigeons with and come with a glorious iridescent green patch on their neck. They nest in holes in trees and farm buildings (an owl box will do very nicely, thank you!) and feed on seeds, leaves, grains, fruit, peas and root crops. However, they are easily mistaken for wood pigeons – so look carefully. Or listen out for a short, deep ooo-uu-ooh!
