50 up!!

It’s taken a while, but the 50th bird species in or over the garden was clocked up today.

A pair of reed buntings have been quietly tucking in to a fine mixture of millet, sunflower seeds, etc. Their striped plumage was quite distinctive, although it took a while to fully dismiss linnet, redpoll or even siskin. Our relentless feeding has finally paid off, though it’s costing quite a bit this winter (particularly when the wood pigeons descend and eat everything!)

No doubt, in due course, the buntings will happily make their way back to the osier beds by the allotments, but please stay for a few more days… or nest in the ivy and brambles and elder twigs (it’s not unknown)…
