The tiger who came to tea

IMG_0701

IMG_0703Just found a splendid Garden Tiger moth (it must have read the book and decided to come to tea). Sadly, this specimen is dead but the dramatic patterning and colouring is still there to be seen.

These have been in decline over the past few years but we have sometimes caught them in the moth trap. If you are really lucky you might disturb one on foliage during the day. The caterpillars are the famous ‘woolly bears’ and these can be easier to spot than the moth – I’ve even found one crossing the path high up in the Black Mountains!
