Still humming away

Some of these spectacular immigrants from the continent are now increasingly suspected to be resident in the UK. It will hibernate as an adult in unheated outbuildings and in crevices and holes in walls and trees, but I’ve only ever come across one caterpillar – in deepest Shropshire. The earliest I’ve seen one on the wing was the first week of March down on the southern cliffs of Cornwall – had it survived the winter or just arrived across the channel? Butterfly Conservation told me they suspected it had successfully hibernated. Another beneficiary of climate change?
