Hammering away

What looks like an extra-extra-large green woodpecker is currently hammering away at the lawn, ripping through autumn leaves in a frantic search for ants and insects. The beak looks particularly powerful when it pummels the ground.

Another bird with a powerful beak is the gannet – but you don’t normally see one in this part of the world! However, last week I met someone at Church Lawford who had found one – injured, blown-off-course – on a footpath near their village! We have a gannet’s skull from the Hebrides, where it’s always great to watch them dive like torpedoes into the deep blue sea…
