Having a cracking time

P1030117 - Copy

P1030116 - CopyAn adult green woodpecker with a juvenile came near the back door this evening. The adult appeared first and busily attacked a crack in the paving, where juicy ants (possibly getting ready to fly – ugghh!) had no doubt been brought to the surface following the torrential rain. Five minutes later it was back again and the young one amusingly came down to copy its parent. After half a minute it worked out what it had to do and jabbed up and down with a beak that always looks as big as a gannet. Plus a long tongue for sweeping up those fresh crunchy morsels. Their dazzling red heads must make some people think they’ve seen a parrot!
