Is this a mate in my palm?

IMG_6852We’ve just found a cute newt in the garden – this immature one will have spent the winter under leaves and stones. They are difficult to identify at this stage, but I don’t think it would be a Palmate Newt – most likely to be a Smooth Newt. The Palmates tend to prefer acidic habitats and aren’t common in Central England. Of course, it might just be a Great Crested Newt… anyway it quickly darted away to seek some protective shade and cover. It won’t enter the water – to breed – for three years so it now has a few summers to explore our patch!
