Plane sailing

A juvenile great spotted woodpecker was darting around the tops of the churchyard plane trees – effortlessly sailing from one branch to another, but then hanging onto a branch as if it didn’t quite know what to do next. It hadn’t yet mastered the ability to feed itself. The sharp kik-kik call gave it away, although that may well have come from a nearby parent.
