High altitude flight

A small tortoiseshell butterfly emerged from hibernation during bell ringing in the church tower yesterday. A bit of warmth at this time of year encourages them to come to life, but it will be another month before they might be properly on the wing. I once worked in an 18 storey tower block (uggh!) and a small tortoiseshell started fluttering in January near the top of the building, no doubt helped by the heat. But how did it get right up there?

A peacock butterfly was happily basking outside our front door two weeks ago on the warmest day of the year so far. It was safely gathered up and is now fast asleep in our hall!
