The big sleepover

Autumn is well and truly here and the butterflies have moved inside for the winter! A small tortoiseshell is now happily hibernating in the hall, where it has tucked itself into a shady corner that will cleverly avoid any disturbance from Christmas decorations. A peacock has also moved indoors, but we have put that in a small breeding cage along with a selection of twigs – already it is hard to spot the dark folded wings amidst the crinkled lime leaves. When will they emerge? I saw a red admiral basking in cool sunlight on New Year’s Day in 2010, so they may awake if the winter is mild.
Great spotted woodpecker on the fat block this morning – birds are slowly returning to the garden in search of tasty morsels, and the fieldfares and redwings should be here soon.
