Despite the weather, there are plenty of birds to be seen around Kineton at the moment. Over the last few days we’ve seen our first ever jay in the garden (hopefully some fat pellets and mealworms might lure it back) and a pair of stock doves are happily canoodling below the bird table. These might easily be mistaken for wood pigeons, but they are slightly smaller and have a beautiful green band around their necks instead of the pigeon’s distinctive white splodge. They were here last year so presumably nest somewhere in Kineton. Other birds of note have included a regular nuthatch (right by the kitchen window), the great spotted woodpecker (drumming away at 5.30 am!) and the tawny owls hooting and hollering until midnight. Plenty of blue tit activity in the nestboxes and house sparrows (Kineton still has decent populations!) are busy in the bushes. It’s always good to see the song thrush too.
